The first thing I need for this project is the main character I want her to be cute and memorable so a player would find themselves falling in love with this kid they’re raising while still making her generic enough that any path you take her down would make sense. In addition there should be a real sense of age progression in the design so that a simple clothing or hair change isn’t the only change as she grows older. With this in mind I made the following sketch of what she might look like.

The next thing I had to decide upon was her clothes, and by extension, the setting I was going for. I designed a few different options from multiple different settings and feels including whether I wanted her default clothing to feel super girly, more tomboyish or neutral. Though I did end up liking quite a few of the looks in the end I decided on the more simple look in the bottom left. I decided on this look after screening the designs with others as well as a personal desire to keep the setting of the world from being too modern and closer to that of a more generic fantasy feel.

Unfortunately the concept sketches were lost due to a problem with procreate and some of the color studies are fairly low grade as well

The next step in the process was to decide on a color scheme for both the girl and her clothing. I decided to tackle both of these issues separately to make sure her design worked on it’s own and not just with one clothing option as, in the future I plan on making a few different costume changes. From the start I had the idea that I wanted the character to have lavender hair though I still wanted to play around with some other colors most ended up candy colored but I made sure to include some more natural colors to try them out. I then narrowed down the selection more to three basic ideas and did subtle variations until I was able to narrow it down to four options. My final choice of pastel blue hair, green eyes, and a medium skin tone were chosen I felt the combination had the best balance out of the options. From there I worked on the clothes I looked at a few different color schemes for this but in the end the neutral option felt the best.
